Carew believes Barry could stay
Aston Villa striker john Carew says the chances of Gareth Barry remaining at Villa park are increasing.

"I think it is 50-50" said Carew. "We all hope Gareth stays because he is such an amazing player - and I will definitely do because I really enjoy playing with him."

The England midfielder has been linked with a move to Liverpool all summer. But with the Reds now seemingly reluctant to match the £18 million asking price Villa fans are beginning to echo Norway striker Carew's confidence.

Barry was booed by some supporters in a friendly at Walshall last week but after coming on as a subsitute in the club's Intertoto Cup clash against Odense at Villa park on Saturday he had the backing of the home crowd as Villa won 1-0 to secure a place in Friday's Uefa second qualifying round draw.

The seedings system means Villa's Intertoto victory should provide them with an easier tie in Friday's draw as they attempt to progress into Europe proper for the first time in six seasons.
