| Rugby: Aussie McGahan takes over from Kidney |
|
European champions Munster have named Tony McGahan as their new director of coaching following Declan Kidney's departure to take over Ireland.
As the club's defence and backs coach since March 2006, the Australian has been a key part of the set-up, headed by Kidney which brought Heineken Cup titles to Thomond Park in 2006 and this season.
The 35 year old, who has also coached Australia's A and Under 19 sides, as well as Brisbane Broncos in rugby league, will commence in his new position on July 1 when he returns from holiday in Sydney after the appointment was ratified by the IRFU yesterday.
McGahan stated; "It is a privilege and a great honour to be asked to lead one of the top clubs and biggest brand names in world rugby".
"Having been involved with Munster for the past three seasons I fully realise what the expectations of all Munster supporters are".
McGahan faces a huge task taking over from the hugely successful Kidney, but the experience of working alongside Ireland's new coach is one which Munster chief executive Garrett Fitzgerald believes will serve McGahan well.
"Tony McGahan has been involved with us for the last number of years, a period that saw him play an integral part in our Heineken Cup success", said Fitzgerald, " In that time he has displayed all the qualities that we believe are required to keep Munster to the forefront".
