Argentina

ARGENTINA

Argentina comes from the Latin argentum which means silver. The origin of the name goes back to the voyages made by the first Spanish Conquistadores (conquerors) to the Río de la Plata. The shipwrecked survivors of the expedition mounted by Juan Díaz de Solís discovered Indians in the region who presented them with silver objects. The news about the legendary Sierra del Plata, a mountain rich in silver, reached Spain around 1524. From this date the Portuguese named the river of Solís, the Silver River (Río de la Plata). Two years later the Spanish used the same name. Since 1860 the official name of the country has been the República Argentina (Republic of Argentina).

  Buenos Aires

More European than South American in flavour, Buenos Aires' heart boasts bustling streets, grand avenues, old-time cafes and stylish restaurants. It's a city of tragedy and elation; a vibrant, cosmopolitan capital where locals are renowned for their flair and cockiness, even in times of adversity. Enjoy a coffee in one of the famously atmospheric cafes or enjoy a delicious steak at one of the city's excellent steak houses.

The city is split into different Neighbourhoods each famous in its own way. In Microcentro you will find The National Congress, Metropolitan Cathedral next to the Government House in the famous plaza and the Colon Theatre, one of the most important opera houses in Latin America. The traditional neighborhood of San Telmo, is famous for its Tango performances and La Boca, the colorful neighborhood originally home to Italian immigrants and now home to many artists, as well the soccer home to Maradona.
Palermo and Recoleta neighbourhoods combine their architecture and history with entertainment and amusement in their many parks. These are very exclusive and elegant areas and it’s where you will find the famous cemetery and burial home of Eva Peron.

  Mendoza

Mendoza, situated 1050 KM west of Buenos Aires is one of Argentina’s most beautiful provincial capital’s. It boasts a bustling shopping district, wonderfully eclectic outdoor cafes and five beautiful central plazas, with giant sycamore trees shading the wide downtown avenues. Mendoza makes an excellent base to explore the Andes, where you will find some of the most spectacular mountain scenery you will ever lay your eyes upon.

  Iguazu Falls

The falls lie split between Brazil & Argentina within 2100 sq km of national park, much of it rainforest teeming with unique flora & fauna. The power, size and sheer noise of the falls are truly spectacular. Views are at their incredible best on clear days, not least for the amazing array of rainbows and butterflies that emerge when the sun is shining. The falls are also home to hundreds of species of birds, including toucans, parrots and parakeets, and many mammals and reptiles.

  Montevideo

Montevideo is the capital of Uruguay, and although small, is a sophisticated and very interesting city, with surprising cultural diversity for such a small population. Montevideo’s major tourist attraction is its beaches, with a very obliging climate which is mild and temperate all year round. The Grand Old Market (Ciudad Vieja), was the continent’s finest when it opened in 1868 and is still well worth a visit today. Also worth seeing are Palacio Salvo which was once South America’s tallest building at 100 metres, and Plaza Indepencia, which is situated at the heart of Montevideo’s old city. You can pay your respects to Jose Artigas, Uruguay’s greatest hero, at his underground tomb, beneath the statue that dominates this beautiful, tree lined square.

  Rosario

Located 320 KM from Buenos Aires, Rosario is a wonderful city with great restaurants, parks and balnearios (river beaches), and a long accessible waterfront. Rosario is home to some very impressive architecture, and is the largest and most economically powerful city in the province of Santa Fe, as well as being the birthplace of Che Guevara.
